I've decided not to bore people with another of my incessantly naggy and long post on movies with history themes... (which people have a huge propensity to ignore anyway... )
ANYWAY....
I should juz go back to the mundane and back to the present..
Something came to mind today.... that is the use of "codes" within a group of friends...
As in... when people know each other for too long... they tend to develop language that is only understood if you belong to that clique.
Because of these codes, there is increasing difficulty for people to make true friends as they grow older. For these codes like our common language (whether it is English or Mandarin or Cantonese) needs to develop over time.
So.. sometimes... when friends know each other long enough, things that happened in the past became part of their lexicon.
Erm.. OK... why am I sayin this... I recalled a stupid conversation with REBEL not long ago.. haa
Basically... we spoke metaphorically..
In MY personal vocab... "radiating" means missing someone dearly till the extent that people do not have to ask what are you thinking. It's like they can FEEL the "aura of yearning" around you. Hence... er hem... radiation... coz the person will be "radiating" "waves of yearning".
(damn... i m philosophical... hahaha)
So.... there was this day.. I showed a friend's blog to Rebel...
Me: Look... this guy is really in love... look at all those words used... read the post on Monday..
(OK... I admit... this is a very stupid thing to do... but the weather is cold and I am bored.. so hey.. why not look at others' blog.. share the fun~)
REBEL: OK.. (she read) another interesting fact from her... guys have sexual thoughts every six seconds.. so I tried countin...
1.. 2... 3.. 4.. 5.. you
1..2... 3.. 4... 5... food
(er blah blah blah... anyway.. in the end.. he calculated LITERALLY.. that every second he was counting 1 2 3 4.. he's thinkin about the gal.. n so there is a lapse of how-many-how-many seconds before he had a sexual thought and how-many-how-many seconds he spent thinking of her)
(sorry to be mean here... but.. hey... I can't stand too mushy stuff... gives me the goosebumps..)
ME: Er.. isnt he radiatin too much?
REBEL: erm.. if yours is call radiating... he is an atomic bomb.
....
....
....
OKIE... I am now in search of the nuclear warheads.
P.S. Well.. if my friend happened to read this. DO NOT KILL ME. hahaa...

THE PIANIST
A certain craze for history films these daez...
Juz borrowed The Pianist from one of my floormates....
It's a story takin place during World War II... a real life story of a Jew Pianist who survived through the war. Well... no matter how many times you watched films on the portrayal of the Jews, it is still very heart rendering the way they were treated then.
A scene at the beginning had a Jew wearing the Star of David arm band as a LABEL of his inferiority and two Nazis soldiers stopped him on the pavement and said,
"Hey... you did not bow."
So the Jewish man turned back and bow. But one of the Nazi soldiers slapped him anyway. The man did not utter a word and walk away. The same soldier then shouted behind him,
"You are not allowed to walk on the pavement, use the gutter instead!"
The man just do as he was told.. stepping into the gutter with puddles of sewage water.
Something this small leaves an impression on me...
Not only will you commiserate at their misfortunes.. but you can't help marvelling at Hitler's frigid and yet captivating propensity to spellbind the public into believing the Jews as vile.

Never understand why it happens.. but it happened. The Jews were systematically herded together and gassed. - Final Solution to the Jewish problem.
1) Banned from goin to public places, using public facilities, the need to wear the Star of David (a Jewish emblem) and no inter racial marriages
Hey... Jews were not even a race on its own.
2) Gathered in ghettos - small areas designated for large number of Jews.
During this period of time, large number of Jews were shot to death as well. (esp. for artists, musicians.. people who could not contribute to the production of war goods); The area is sealed off with brick walls.
3) Concentration camps (mostly in Poland) to be gassed. This too, it's systematic.
Initially, the Jews thought that they were gathered there to provide free labour for the Germans. But things got a lot worse.
They were ask to undress... Nazis took all their valuables including gold dentures. (dur)
Nazis soldiers then shaved them hairless (regardless of their genders) and they were asked to go into a big "bath room" where they were showered.
And then.. the final destination would be the gas chamber where they were gassed. The Nazis would then pile up the corpses and burn them.
Gosh... Arent the Nazis mad?

THE SCHINDLER'S LIST
Anyway...
In the Schindler's List, the man Oskar Schindler, a Nazis officer and well known womanizer, saved about a thousand Jews who were nearly gassed to death.
It is, again, a real life story... and in fact, the Jews who were saved by him call themselves "Schindler's Jews". He saved them by making a list and hiring them in his factory claiming to produce goods for the Nazis. But in actuality, it never produce anything.
Because of him, the Auschwitz concentration camp with an atrocious and infamous name of being a camp where "trains that entered never leave", there was one train that was able to leave the camp. It housed the Jewish women and children on Schindler's List.

IF YOU DO NOT MIND A LITTLE HISTORY
Good night and Good Luck (2005)
A new movie in black and white to retell the story of the McCarthy Era in the US.
It is about the witch-hunt carried out by the president in dealing with the communists. People in US were terrified by the "Red Scarre" - the paranoia brought about by the Cold War era.
McCarthy came up with ways to tackle with the communists and possible communists sympathizers in the country. He made claims of an influx of communists spies in the country and targeted writers and entertainers in particular with uncorroborated accusation of sedition. These dealings came under the responsibility of the House of Un-American Activities Committee.
During this period of time, the media was too intimidated to retaliate and rebuke the president's actions. However, there were still lone voices who stood up from the rest. This story of "Good Night and Good Luck" talks about THEM.
The term "McCarthyism" came to mean:
1. The political practice of publicizing accusations of disloyalty or subversion with insufficient regard to evidence
2. The use of methods of investigation and accusation regarded as unfair, in order to suppress opposition.

Btw, that is the real McCarthy in the movie. Thaz most probably the reason for the movie to be in black and white.
OK. The movie may not be to the taste of everyone. But it's an interestin bit of American history.

Well... I remembered crossin the road the side where the demonstraters are... n someone behind us says, "dim gai gwa lo doe nei yau hang gei?" (Basically trans to mean: why are the caucasians (gui lao --> ghosts man --> a local term for white men..) demonstratin as well?)

but.. who says White can't be HK citizens?
